VIRGO MATER REGINA (2012)

available for SATB or TTBB
duration 5'

Virgo Mater Regina was commissioned to conclude a three-part concert mass called Virgin, Mother, Queen. The poem reflects that structure, borrowing phrases from Marian liturgical texts and interspersing strands of new poetry translated elegantly into Latin.

The music draws on silent memories from beneath Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière (Our Lady of the Beautiful Window) in Chartres Cathedral. France had rained a muted grey all day long, but after a few minutes inside the cathedral the clouds broke and every piece of stained glass flushed with sunlight. The window (constructed nearly a millennium ago) was set ablaze by the bright sky, each hue dazzlingly modern.

Free-metered and filled with evocative surges of color, Virgo Mater Regina is beyond all else a supplication for peace and love. Find the ancient strength, the modern spirit, and let the silences sing as reverently as the music between them.
