No Apologies (2011)

concert band Grade 2.5
duration 3'15"

Originally written for orchestra, No Apologies was premiered in 2005 by the Bene’t Orchestra of Cambridge, England, under the direction of Martin Kleppmann. The piece is dedicated to Martin, the man gave No Apologies its first life (under its Greek title Kamia Apologia) as well as my first orchestral and international performance – an experience which became a motivating dynamic towards a life in music.

In 2011 I decided to re-invent the piece for Concert Band, wishing to encourage students by designing a piece which requires musicality, but can be accomplished technically by middle and high school bands (~Grade 2-3). The title is a reference to the final chord that surrounds and suspends the listener in quiet reflection, undistracted by a feeling of resolution.
