How Long Ago (2008)

duration 4'

In the summer of 2008, I ran across Christina Rossetti's poem ECHO. As I began to set it to music I noticed two distinct musical languages emerging from the text. The first was rooted in a very dark c minor tonality and the second had a bright, major bitonal pull. The two languages remain distinct, alternating with stanza-related text painting, until they are literally stacked on top of each other at "pulse for pulse, breath for breath." The piece was premiered by the Centenary College Camerata in April 2009 under its original title ECHO.
